Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Students,

I hope that you have had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. As we embark on what will assuredly be an unprecedented school year, I want to take a moment to welcome back new and returning students and families to the start of a new year. When schools were shuttered this past spring districts around the country had to pivot from traditional teaching and learning to remote teaching and learning overnight. While there were speed bumps along the way, the experience from this past spring highlighted for school systems successes, as well as challenges, that served as notice for what we can do to improve teaching and learning for all students in the midst of a pandemic.

As we begin the school year in a virtual manner technology becomes a key piece of the puzzle when formulating an instructional plan to reach as many students as possible. Our teachers have been working tirelessly to further their professional learning and development in a manner to best support students virtually. We are providing information on our virtual transition into learning for families via the school website, the SMS PTO page, and the district web site. Teachers will be reaching out to families prior to the first virtual day of school to ensure students have the items they will need to be successful when we begin virtual learning (schedule, technology, updated contact information, etc.). Custodial crews have been busy preparing for the return of teachers and the eventual return of students. Systems and processes have been put into place prioritizing student and staff safety while reopening our building. Families are encouraged to reach out to us at 436-1020 should additional questions remain as we kick off what we believe will be another safe and successful school year!

We look forward to working with you in the coming days and years!
