Drone Team

SMS started drone teams in the 2023-24 school year.  Drone teams are groups of four students who code and pilot flying quadcopter drones through a series of competitions.  In the inaugural year, we had great success! Two teams qualified and participated in the Northeast Middle and High School Drone Championship in Fairmont, West Virginia, in May.  They completed with some of the best drone pilots in the world in a competition that saw global records set and broken at least three times.   This competition fielded teams from an area that spans from Kentucky to Maine.

We plan to build on this success in the 2024-25 school year.  The local competition will be held in late February or early March.  The competition season tasks will be released on September 10th.  Applications and practices will open at the end of October.
